Streams & Springs
STREAMS & SPRINGS
Water sources within the Study Area consist of streams (washes), springs, and water tanks or ponds.
STREAMS
The Study Area’s ephemeral streams flow out of the Superstition Mountains and Foothills into the valley floor through fan shaped areas of alluvial (sand, mud, gravel, etc.) deposits formed by washes where their velocity is abruptly decreased. These streams have provided important water to the riparian vegetation of the Study Area, sustaining critical wildlife habitat.
SPRINGS
The Superstition Mountains area also contains several springs which provide a perennial source of water. These springs have been an important source of water for the ancient Hohokam Indians to today’s ranchers and recreationalists, as well as for wildlife.
WATERTANKS
There are several water tanks or ponds throughout the Study Area which are used and maintained by ranchers for cattle.
WELLS
There are also a few wells around the Study Area, which are used by ranchers for cattle.
